Even though we haven’t posted too much lately besides our font roundup, we definitely hope any lulls in content will allow us to come back even stronger than before! Anyway, we’ve wanted to share reasons to leave comments on blog posts for quite some time now. There’s been some posts floating around about leaving comments and we really wanted to share our take. Let us know if you relate!
1. It helps the author. If you love a blog and you don’t comment, you’re not helping the blogger tailor content to you. But if you share what you loved (or would improve upon even—constructively of course), the writer will know how to improve their content. In the end, it helps you as a reader just as much as it gets your name out there as a fellow blogger.
2. It brightens their day. I know this sounds cheesy, but we think that little things in life are often actually the most important. The other day I read a thoughtful comment on our other blog, and I felt so validated that what I was doing was the right thing. If you feel like someone has helped you in some way through their advice, tips, or story, please, PLEASE let them know! To most people, it means the world!
3. It builds community. Should I go on? We’ve talked about community so much here at TBM. We’d never bring it up so much if it wasn’t vital to blogging. Engaging isn’t just about getting your name out there, it’s about adding a human element to the digital world. By intentionally leaving a comment, you’re strengthen your authenticity (no matter what platform it’s on) which is helpful for building lasting relationships and bettering your reputation online.
PS Jenn and I met through blogging, and if we never left comments on each other’s blogs, we’d never have ended up creating The Blog Market or Conscious Shop Collective together! The power of blogging is real, guys!
4. It shows you have valuable feedback. Just like your feedback helps the author strengthen their content, it teaches them the importance of the reader’s opinion on what their writing. I think of blogging as kind of a give-and-take relationship. It’s not like print publishing where you literally have to write in after the fact to send a comment! As a reader, you play a very important role, and it gives the writer kind of a reality check that people are listening.
5. It really does get your name out there. At first, I didn’t want to put this on the list because I feel it’s so obvious! This is the #1 reason people say you should engage and leave a comment. I think this is a huge benefit and super rewarding—who doesn’t want to gain a follower—but I don’t think it should be your primary reason for engaging. When it becomes #1 on the list, the quality of your comments goes down (like those Instagram bots that will leave comments for you) and you worry more about quantity than quality. Instead, be more intentional about the comments you leave and think of it as a way to continue a conversation or build relationships with those you really admire. Those are the people you want to notice you anyway, as their a higher quality audience!
How often do you leave comments on blogs? What about Instagram? Would love your input.

This is so true. I love the fact that it builds community. I love when people on my blog interact amongst themselves. Plus yes, it really does brighten our day and feedback is always great.
Hope this comment brightens yours! Xx

I agree with all of this! And I totally think it builds community. I fan girl a little bit when famous bloggers respond to my comment, but it also shows how accessible the internet allows us to be with those we follow and with our own followers. What other profession can give you instant feedback like blogging can? It’s so cool!
And I always love hearing what people have to say on my posts, so I know other people probably feel the same way when I decide to comment. As long as you are posting meaningful comments, it really is a positive thing.

Totally agree with all of these!! I wish blog commenting was more common because it’s such a fun way to connect and actually feel like you are communicating and helping people. I think with social media becoming more popular, blog commenting kind of died off and it makes me sad.
I try to comment on blogs when I feel like I have valuable feedback or something related to say. I feel like it’s a way to really connect with the blogger and say “Hey – I like what you’re doing :)”

Thanks for the reminders! Getting comments is valuable for all of those reasons. Your posts are always super informative. I appreciate all of your insight and advice.
On a random sidenote…I have been searching to see if you have posted about how to prep your blog post images (not editing). Can you please share if you have? Would love to get tips on that because I feel like I am missing some steps.
Thank you!

Thanks Ale! Great idea, we definitely have a few tips. I’ll have to put it on the calendar!

That post was very inspiring for me. I follow a lot of blogs on bloglovin and I think they are great, I just never reply because I allways thought it wasn’t necesary because I don’t have a blog myself.
Now I really try to comment on posts. Hope you have a great day :-)
Kelsey says
I agree 100% – I need to comment on other blogs more! Thanks for the reminder :)

I don’t comment on blogs as often as I should. I think it’s mostly because I feel like I need to come up with some insightful or witty comment.
On my blog I like reading comments because it’s rewarding to know I’ve helped someone or given them another point of view to consider.

I totally love this post awareness! I feel like people are still reading blogging but commenting has fallen off. Thank you for putting it out there!

I comment more on blogs than Insta. But I think it’s because I have fat finger syndrome and typing on my phone is a struggle. :)

When I read an article or post that I really like, I always try to comment because I want to show the author that I’d like to see similar posts either in the same style or on the same topic. Feedback from your audience is such a valuable tool!

Obviously I had to leave a comment, haha! These are great points and I always try to leave thoughtful comments to let the writer know I enjoyed their content AND actually read what they say. Comments really do help with what kind of content we should create for our readers!

I started following your blog around a month ago and I really enjoy reading your posts, they are insightful, well written, concise and fun. Keep it up!

I have to admit, I’ve been more a lurker than a commenter on my favourite blogs for years. Even if I’ve completed adored someone’s post, I haven’t even considered commenting to let them know. Yet it bums me out when I pour my best efforts into a post and don’t get any/many comments! So I’ve recently committed to taking the time to comment on blog posts :) thanks for this list, it gave me a couple of things to think about!
Paula, The Geeky Shopaholic says
A big Yes! to number two! Every comment I get makes me smile! I’m really working to comment more on other blogs. To help myself do this I have a bookmark folder set up of my favorite blogs so I remember to visit them more often. :)

I tend to leave more comments on blogs than I used to. When I really love a blog or a specific post, it’s nice to let the blogger know! I know how much I love getting comments, so I like to leave one anytime I have something to say.
Lucie says
That’s an amazing post! I have to agree with number two – there is nothing better than a comments from my readers. Just the small one. :-)
Have a beautiful day

I really appreciate comments on my blog … they definitely make my day. Especially if the comment shows that the reader has read the post, and has engaged with my content. I like to lave the same kind of thoughtful response when I read other blogs. BTW thanks very much for your helpful advice and tips. They are always appreciated. And acted upon. Blogging when you’re doing everything yourself…like I am… Is certainly a big learning curve

Hey you!
This is the first post I`ve read in this blog and I really want to say thank you for this inspiration!
I am starting a blog right now and of course I have heard quite often that I should leave comments on blogs I like. But I never felt comfortable with doing it just to promote my blog and get new followers. This istn`t the way I do may blog either. I want to write for other people because I want to help them improve their lives. Not because I want people to read my stuff or to get their money. I have an quite idealistic approach to my own blogging and you showed my how I can look at commenting other blogs in the same way. So thank you very much for sharing your thoughts!
Vivian says
These are good points! Leaving a comment means you are being sincere in your feedback. A bit more meaningful than a “click”.
Jess says
This is so true, I love receiving comments and feedback and its a great way to build community :)

I’ve just come across your blog on Bloglovin and I’ve read five posts already! I thought this would be a suitable post to leave a comment. Thanks for your content – so useful but unique too! Lauren – http://www.theyoproedit.com

I found this blog from another, and so far I’m impressed! I really liked this post. I try to leave comments as often as I can, and I find that it helps me to get more feedback on my own blog! I also love building contacts with other bloggers.
