Good morning! It’s been a little quiet here this week. Life’s gotten a little crazy and we both have some travel this month. I started to stress a little but then I thought, The Blog Market is something I vowed never to stress out over! Speaking of, last month I wrote on things I planned to stop stressing out over, and Instagram was on that list. I spent the month growing a few different accounts I manage for work (including my own) and kept that in mind the whole time. And you know what? I got to experience all the fun parts of Instagram: curating a feed, practicing photography, building community, etc., without that “this will make or break me” feeling I had before.
One of the key factors here was searching for good hashtags to use to promote my work. This is hard because there are SO many to choose from. But once I found those people in my niche that also used hashtags to promote their blogs/brands, it had a snowball effect. I started making connections and experiencing growth. I’d been using hashtags for awhile now, but when adding that into my no-stress mantra, I’ve fallen in love with Instagram all over again. Yay!
Okay, onto the hashtags. I’m just going to list all the ones I love and have used + some I just discovered. If I have an account listed next to them in parenthesis, it means that’s the account that created the tag (I don’t know them all and some kind of just materialized :)). You don’t need to tag the account that created it when you use them, though you could if you used their product or publication. You’ve probably seen #ABM____ hashtags, like #ABMlifeissweet, by A Beautiful Mess. Tons of other lifestyle influencers have done that, and it’s a good way to join in with likeminded individuals and possibly get yourself a regram by one of your blog heros. Feel free to share if you know anymore than I do about any particular one or its origins! Like I said, I use a lot of these. If it’s one I use all the time to promote my work, I follow the account that created it. Because obviously, I love their vibe and want to be a part of their community.
I wanted to mention that there is a certain etiquette around hashtag use. I know the ins and outs of Instagram quite well, but as much as I want to ramble on, I just want this to be a list that you can use as a resource. If you see one that intrigues you, search it, see who’s using it, see who made it, and see if your photos fall into the mix. If so, it’s a good chance that this can help grow your account and indirectly, your blog! If not, it’s likely not worth your time–you want to always make sure there’s a purpose besides just likes and follows, like community, connecting, and tapping into a QUALITY audience.
50 Lifestyle Hashtags to Promote Your Blog On Instagram
*EDIT* We’re thrilled that so many are using our hashtag lists to promote their posts. I took the accounts associated with the hashtags out since people were just copy + pasting the hashtags and I can only assume all of the real people behind these hashtags were wondering why :). If you are serious about growing your Insta, it makes more sense to look at individual tags and use only those relevant! I do have the list of accounts behind many of the hashtags (those that started it), just contact me if you’d like to see.

Great lists Angela, thanks a lot) I’d only like to say that no matter how well you pick the tags it’s all about how you utilize them. Quite often it’s better to interact with someone else’s content rather than wait for someone to discover yours. Considering my niche – wedding flowers, beauty and fashion – i have too many competitors and niche posts to do it manually. As a first-contact-mean i use zengram.net, it finds potentially interested users and leaves a like for me to see, then i personally check out the instagrams, comment and DM people. This helps to expand my reach and increase the quality of my following, highly recommend.

I know that I am about to sound ‘not smart’, but I never knew what hashtags were for. And, really I still don’t really understand. I loved your post, but still not sure why I need to use them.
Angela says
Hi Libby! They are basically a way to categorize your photos. The idea would be that if you use the hashtag #blogtips you’d be categorizing your photo as one related to blog tips. So businesses and bloggers use them a lot so other people will find their photo. Hashtag and location are two popular ways to search for photos on Instagram, besides just typing in a name or using Explore.
You don’t have to use them, but if you don’t have many followers and are looking to gain more, then you’ll want to because otherwise people won’t know how to find you/that you exist at all. Hope that makes sense/helps! :)
Maria says
This post is so useful! I recently started a blog and I am struggling with advertising my content. Hopefully these hashtags help me find other blogs like mine, as well as some more readers.

Hi Angela – great blog :-) hashtags change all the time, today X is popular, tomorrow Y. Have you ever looked at TagPredict? I run this app – http://www.TagPredict.com – – it can give you live hashtags analytics and scraping options, by popularity. Please feel free to contact me anytime, if any questions / suggestions. Cheers :-) —Mat.
