It seems like every single day, there is something new to watch out for in blogging. Do the images on your site belong to you? If not, have you properly credited them? Even if they’re credited, do you have legal permission to use them? Gone are the days when we could just post inspiring images with the caption “source unknown”. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know about copyright laws until it’s too late and they are wrapped up on a lawsuit over a cute pic they found on Pinterest.
At the same time, it’s equally as important to protect yourself as a blogger, freelancer, or small business owner. Whether it involves copyrighting your own photos or creating contracts for clients about design projects, there are lots of ways to avoid getting in legal (or just plain awkward) situations.
Today I’ve rounded up a few useful blogging resources for those of us who don’t have the time or money to get involved in any legal issues (I’m guessing that’s ALL of us).
1. Sponsored content is a great way to monetize your blog, but it’s necessary to properly disclose these posts. Love this informative post on The Well all about writing disclosure statements.
2. Here is an amazing post from Amy Lynn Andrews with tons of resources on using images legally on your site. She also includes tips on how to make your own graphics for your blog posts!
3. Does your blog have a Terms and Conditions page? Read this post from Oh My! Handmade to learn how to write out your terms and conditions, as well as your site’s privacy policy.
4. Check out Kory’s post on how you can protect yourself as a business owner by setting boundaries with clients and being clear on things like refunds, project termination, etc. The small details are usually the ones that matter the most.
If you have any blogging tips related to legal issues, feel free to share them below. :)
Have a nice weekend!
