Happy Monday! Did you read our post on 2016 creative and business books? We had read a couple but were really excited to dig into the others. Jenn and I both decided we wanted to actually read them, and not just talk about them, sooo the idea of a TBM book club was formed! Strictly for inspiring and helpful books on business, work-life balance, creativity, etc. etc. We both love taking a peek into the processes of others and hearing their stories, so it only seemed fitting. Thought we’d invite you all to join in reading along with us, if you’d like!
We’re going to start with this book from our list, Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind, by Scott Barry Kaufman and Carolyn Gregoire. It recently came out but is already well received, and when we read the synopsis we were so intrigued! I was not kidding when I said I was adding it to my cart while writing that post.
As you go through the book, you learn about the ten things highly creative people do differently. To preface these things, the authors mention that these actions and processes are full of contradictions, because that’s what it’s like to be a creative person: you constantly look deep within yourself, yet you’re more engaged with the outside world; you’re highly imaginative, yet contrary to popular belief, grounded in reality, etc. Going through the preface and intro, I was already highlighting things that really resonated with me, so I’m looking forward to digging deeper. As much as I think this book will be really validating for me, I hope that it will also help inspire me to embrace my own processes and kind of unleash the things that drive me to create in the first place.
We’re both going to start reading it this week. We don’t have a deadline on when to finish, though if you want to join you’ll probably want to grab a copy ASAP. It’s pretty relaxed. I already started a journal club so I should probably cool it on strict commitments for the time being, but considering we were going to read anyway, why not? We’ll check in on our Instagram and encourage you to post inspiring pics and caption them with your feelings on the book throughout (#tbmbookclub). We’ll check in with a blog post or two too and some discussion questions, which hopefully will spark some posts of your own. Get your copy here or in your local bookstore!
