For today’s resources we wanted to do something kind of general on the topic of blog visuals! Photos, branding, design… These are all things that your reader is hit with the second she clicks into your site. We obviously want people to stick around long enough to actually read the content, so it’s super important to always be evolving and improving (note I didn’t say be perfect–a blog is a work in progress at all times) when it comes to that first impression. Enjoy!
1. One way to boost that visual experience is to occasionally use infographics rather than photos. Don’t Tell Anyone offers up an awesome example that’s visually appealing and not dry or overly complicated, as well as an explanation on why they work.
2. We loved this post by Adventure At Work on ways to unblogger your blog. If you have a blogger blog, (and I still think most of us have at one point!) you want to make more professional, it’s a must read.
3. And for you fellow WordPress users, Simply Clarke rounded up 12 WordPress themes bloggers would love. You definitely want to know your options when it comes to a new blog design.
4. I appreciated Katybelle’s honest post on how her photos have improved over time and the lessons she’s learned. Photography is both a form of fine art and yet extremely technical, so like many other skills that go into blogging, it’s tough to master. It’s always nice to hear another person’s journey when it comes to photos.
Over to you – what’s ONE part of your website’s visuals you’d like to improve on next? Maybe we can do a post on it!

It’s something I’ve given some thought to recently and decided to focus on bringing together theme colors, logo and the images used to feature posts (like the one you have in this post) together. I’ve started implementing this on one of my blogs. It’s a lot of work but once streamlines, I think it can really help with branding.

Thank you for the shout out!

Thanks for a great post. I clicked on the link you provided for tips from Adventure at Work to “Unblogger Your Blog” and most of the actions she suggests don’t work. Is this maybe because the article is from last year and Blogger has changed from then?

Oh interesting! Thanks for letting us know. I did another search and can’t find anything from this year on Blogger (I’ll keep an eye out!) but I wonder if any of these are more relevant even though they’re from awhile back? Hope it helps!

I’d like to update the look of my logo (la ti do). I’m just thinking a new font, maybe something a bit more professional looking.

I want to change my blog header and get a logo. I’ve been going around in circles on this point. Any tips would be really helpful.

I would like to have a better feel of what to do with posts where photos are not so obvious. I have a fashion blog, and I wanna write fashion content, where outfit photos are not so relevant. I have a few ideas up my sleeve, but I need the time to have a real photoshoot with my clothes and some backdrops.
