Happy Friday! I’ve recently talked to a few friends about what nontraditional employment is like, and there are truly so many ups and downs. So after finding these posts really inspiring and relatable, we wanted to make sure anyone starting a business or jumping into freelance full time knew these important truths about self-employment.
1. In the first post we came across, Madison of Grace + Vine shared her take on what no one tells you about self-employment that we found to be true for so many biz owners. It’s easy to say “that wouldn’t happen to me” and find yourself really surprised.
2. We loved these four points from Yes Supply Co about the reality of self-employment. The part about taxes and setting your rate SEEMS. SO. SIMPLE. but let us tell you, it is insanely tough to figure out.
3. This post by Lifestyle Maven on 8 reasons to love and hate self-employment is from last year but it’s so entertaining and I think anyone who has been self-employed for any amount of time will love it. Nice to just laugh at the love-hate relationship that can come with owning a biz or being a freelancer!
4. So much truth to this post from Hannah Gale on 4 things that shocked her about going self-employed. It all sounds really trivial until you’re in it and realize it’s actually a pretty big deal that you have to chase down payments, cope with loneliness, or feel like you could literally fall down and take a nap at ANY moment.
The best thing about all these posts is that most of us wouldn’t trade it for anything. It can be super tough to be self-employed but it’s rewarding in so many other ways. I think it’s important to always try to improve your process and experience though, because it can take years to get it right!
If you’re self employed, what has been the most difficult or surprising thing for you to deal with? What’s the best part?

For me, having the support system has been the hardest. I have no one around me that does anything similar and very few that are entrepreneurs. So others end up dragging you down a bit simply because they don’t understand the lifestyle.
