When I began freelancing a couple years ago, I didn’t seek out my first few clients. They actually found me! It was at a time that I wasn’t quite ready to pursue freelancing because I felt I had so much more to learn about web design and development. I quickly realized that there is never a perfect time to dive into freelancing, and I’m really glad I took on my first clients even if I didn’t know a thing about running a small business.
Working with clients is an interesting experience because every single client situation is different. You might land your dream client and find out that it’s more of a nightmare situation. Or you might have really chill clients who you can work with again and again. Learning to communicate well, setting boundaries, and staying confident are just a few things I consider extremely important in my projects with clients. Read on for some valuable advice from a few awesome biz owners!
1. Finding little ways to make your clients feel good about their experiences is always a great idea. We love Irene’s post on Magnolia House Creative about how you can use details and execution to enhance your client experience.
2. Along the same lines, Caitlin of Design Sponge wrote a post on thinking beyond the basics for your business. Click through for tons of ideas to make your business unique and memorable for clients!
3. Receiving negative feedback from clients can be such a heart sinking feeling, but it definitely gets easier with time. Check out Braid Creative’s post on how to deal with client rejection and negative feedback for some helpful tips.
4. Possibly the most significant thing I’ve learned in freelancing is that it’s okay to say no to clients. If this is something you struggle with, read this post from Ashlee of Work From Home Happiness on why it’s okay to let toxic clients go. Take care of yourself! :)
