Does anyone else like to refresh their blog roll every once in a while? I think I used to have fun finding blogs to follow when I wasn’t constantly inundated with links via social media. There’s so much information out there. Even though these ways to discover new blogs still use social media, I do them when I want to dig a little deeper and find brand new content. If you’re looking for some new reads but are stuck on how to find them, here’s a few ways to try!
Instead of searching a keyword and finding the most re-pinned content, follow boards dedicated to specific blog content you love. Check them from time to time and see if any new blogs have been pinned, click through, and read other posts. Group boards generally have a ton of pins to choose from—you don’t have to join them, but it can be fun to follow along! This DIY board is a great example of a mega-board full of bloggers to discover on one specific subject.
We’re lucky to have lots of blogs following us on our twitter account (thank you!), so when we want to get inspired we just go through our list and click over to profiles to explore. We suggest browsing our followers, of course, but you can also go to any blog you love and see not just who they’re following, but who’s following them. It’s a great way to find undiscovered bloggers because so many new bloggers are building their social media along with their brands.
Similar to twitter, I usually go through follow lists rather than just hashtags or the explore function. If you’re growing your Instagram, you’re probably going through hashtags regularly, so you end up finding posts from blogs you already know. That’s great, but another way is to see who your fave blogs are following, and jump around. It’s like finding music—you see what’s related, and so on. Be sure to look long enough to find accounts that don’t have a ton of followers—sometimes there are great bloggers behind them that just haven’t become (prepare for cringe-y term): “insta famous”.
For finding new blogs via Facebook, we look to groups. Groups don’t work the same way as pages where you are basically just promoting your work and hoping someone sees it (and often people don’t unless you pay to boost). Instead, a group is a platform for connecting with your community. I’m in a few location based groups but Jennifer is in some that are for bloggers anywhere, Like Blogging Boost and My Pro Blog + Biz by Erika of Olyvia.co. Each group has its own requirements (like signing up for a newsletter to join, etc.) and many of them have certain days/posts dedicated to blog promotion, meaning that you can go through a fresh new list of reads each week!
BLOGLOVIN’
I love to scroll through my bloglovin’ feed—some of the blogs are ones I’ve been reading since college. But searching for new blogs on bloglovin’ can be frustrating. The most popular blogs top the list in each category day after day. It’s rare that I find a blog I haven’t heard of in each of the site’s categories. Instead, they have a feature where you can search by keyword—at the top when you’re logged in. When you search the word DIY, for example, blogs, posts, and people will pop up. From there you can also search related tags. It still goes by what’s popular but normally I’ll switch over to the “posts” tab because it brings up individual articles. I can scroll through and if a post catches my eye, go to the blog’s page to see what else they’ve been posting. To get started, just search something specific (even if it seems random) that you’re into lately, and find bloggers who are posting similar content!
