We have something different for you today. My good photographer friend (and co-working pal) Jessica is sharing her top podcasts for starting a business. Jess and I have both spent time in Southern California (she’s from there), yet coincidentally we ended up in Seattle at a time where we’re shifting and growing our businesses. I’m so lucky to be able to meet up with her so much! (You know how important that is). When we first met, she worked in digital advertising (which she was amazing at!). Later, after having her second child, she wanted to find a more creative career while remaining flexible for her girls. Fast forward a bit, she rediscovered her passion for photography and has since been growing a new creative business, Jess Flagel Photography.
Throughout this process, Jess has really done her research when it comes to starting a business. Every week I swear she is introducing me to a new podcast, each one more helpful, inspiring, and motivating than the last. She has recommendations for literally any project I’m working on that week! I figured it was time we rounded some of them up, and who better to ask than the podcast pro herself? I’ll stop talking now and let her take it from here!

Top Podcasts for Starting a Business & Staying Inspired
1. Biz Chix. I’m typically drawn to podcasts and biz books from people in creative industries but this one covers all types of women owned businesses. I especially love the On-Air coaching episodes. I also like that many of her podcast guests that are a bit older than me… it’s nice to hear perspectives from ladies in their mid 40’s & 50’s.
Fav episode: How to Prioritize Ideas & Opportunities
2. Awesome with Alison. I first learned about Alison on IG back when I was pregnant in 2015. I can’t remember how I came across her account but she was pregnant at the same time and would post hilarious and totally inappropriate dance videos that I just couldn’t get enough of. Fast forward 3 years and she is more than preggo. Being in a similar stage of life, with young kiddos and being married for about 10 years, she just puts out content that is so relatable as a mama and biz owner. With just about every episode I laugh, cry, and get a boost of inspiration. Definitely check out her dance moves on her Instagram!
Fav episode: Mastering Growth, Confidence and Life with Joy Cho of Oh Joy!
3. Rise, Goal Digger, Marie Forleo, and Online Marketing Made Easy by Amy Porterfield: I like these ones for their tangible tools and ideas to grow a business. Amy Porterfield’s pod often offers free downloadable guides & checklists. I recently used her 2019 Planning Roadmap and was able to plan out my business for the next 6 months, and got so much clarity.
4. Second Life: As someone who has embarked on a second career and taken a bit of a jump into something new, I find this podcast so refreshing. I feel like I’ve had a nice long chat with friends after listening to each episode. Hilary’s questions are so thoughtful and she asks just the kind of stuff that I want to know about.
Fav episode: There are SO many good ones but I was extra surprised and delighted by Ep. 11 with Jessica Alba. It was not what I was expecting at all.
5. What the Eff: I love how they are growing their apparel line, Cove, in real time. They share their wins and losses along the way and it’s just so relatable. They discuss ideas about personal growth, books, motherhood, and relationships. Listening to them is like an extra dose of time spent with my IRL friends.
Fav episodes: Episode 10 with Elle Rowley of Solly Baby & Ep 26 on Eckhart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now.
Big thanks to Jess for her podcast reccs! If you’re in the Seattle or SoCal areas looking for a family, portrait, or brand photographer, be sure to check out her work. And, anyone looking for more tips on starting a business? Check out our favorite career books!
