When I first listed my profile in a freelance directory, it was because I knew a friend that worked for a company that had a classifieds website. They were trying to get more freelancers involved, so I sent them my portfolio. At the time, I didn’t really know these were commonplace in the freelance world (which is funny, because it really is just a classifieds listing, so it’s like a modern take on putting out a for-hire ad!). I had pretty steady jobs so I didn’t have expectations, or need to have expectations, to the kind of inquiries it might bring me.
I really loved being listed in the directory! I can’t remember how many jobs I got from that first one, but I met a lot of other writers and designers, and sometimes they’d refer me to clients or we’d just collaborate on non-paid projects. Either way, I found it valuable and I’d even meet people in local events that would know me from it, which was great. Fast forward to this new year, I finally joined another. Like most freelancers, I’m pretty mindful of where I invest money in my business. But I have to say, it’s been SO helpful to me especially at this stage of freelance, where I’ve rebranded and am building up a new client base. So today I wanted to share a little more about why you might want to list your profile in a freelance directory, and what it can do for you.
What is an Online Freelance Directory?
A freelance directory is a website dedicated to listing the work and experience of different freelancers for hire. My experience is with creative digital services, so it may differ depending on your field. Some of these directories are huge, well established communities, like the Society of Professional Journalists, which has been around for over 100 years! But these days, there are a lot of super small, independent directories, that are more like little communities dedicated toward bringing freelancers together and supporting each other. In fact, a lot of times, the client looking to hire a freelancer, is a freelancer herself. Creative Lady Directory, ilovecreatives, Taylor Magazine, and even the directory for Squarespace designers all operate like this.
Should You List Your Profile in a Freelance Directory?
In my experience, if you are a freelancer in areas like design, writing, social media, web development, or photography, it can absolutely be worth it, even if there is a bit of investment in the beginning. It’s generally a membership based service, and pretty minimal. I find that even if it doesn’t directly convert to income (AKA new clients), there aren’t many of them that are so expensive that you would regret doing so. However, I think there’s a few ways you can guarantee that your money and time goes farthest.
How To Find The Best One For You
Consider the niche. Get in the mindset of your client. Would they be browsing this directory when looking to hire? I like to choose ones that have writers already listed, but aren’t so oversaturated with people who do what I do, that I’m buried.
Consider the location. Consider whether your line of work depends on location. Some directories, like ilovecreatives, have sections dedicated to different cities. Some are entirely remote. And some operate in other countries, which may be useful if you’re open to international work.
Check out the other members. Be sure to click on lots of profiles and see what the other members are like. Are they a group you can see yourself being listed alongside, and maybe even collaborating with? It’s also nice to save a few for any time you may be looking to hire yourself!
Once you do join, be sure to share the link with friends and followers. If you join a new Facebook group, this is a way to let people get to know you without simply saying “Hi! Hire me, here’s my website”. It’s more personal and I think it helps expose your work. Lastly, if you are able to add a question to your website contact form, ask potential clients where they found you so you’ll be able to see if it’s from one of your directory listings. That helps you track which work may be coming from your investment into a freelance directory.
Fellow creatives, you joined any freelance directories like the ones above? Let us know your experience!

I’ve never really thought about joining a freelance directory but I really think I should. I’ve just launched my own business separate to my blogging so I think it could be really beneficial. Thank you for this post!
